Aquatic Invasive Species

Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) are a serious threat to Minnesota waters, and one of the greatest conservation challenges of our time. The growth potential of AIS in a new ecosystem without natural predation or disease can be explosive, and expensive. AIS are plants, animals, and diseases that can harm lakes, rivers, streams, wetlands, water quality, and wildlife habitat. These organisms can survive and reproduce rapidly in their new environment, outcompeting native species for habitat and resources.

Humans can unintentionally spread AIS by moving watercraft, bait containers, and equipment from one waterbody to another, or by releasing non-native species into the environment. AIS have serious economic, environmental, and recreational impacts in Minnesota. Beltrami County strives to prevent the spread of AIS within county waters, and with your help we will be successful! There are currently three known AIS in Beltrami County: Faucet Snails, Zebra Mussels, and Starry Stonewort.
