Press Release: One Arrested Following Fatal Stabbing

Ten Lake Township, Beltrami County- On June 15^th 2025, at approximately 9:30PM, Beltrami County Communication Center received a 911 call regarding an adult male who was stabbed in the 1300 block of Porcupine Rd SE, Cass Lake, MN. Beltrami County Deputies and Leech Lake Tribal Police Officers responded. Upon arrival it was determined that 28-year-old Codi Brown had been stabbed . Life saving efforts were attempted, but ultimately Brown died at an area hospital from his injuries.

Law Enforcement identified the suspect as 21-year-old Avery Cadwell. Law Enforcement located and arrested Cadwell in the morning hours of June 16^th, and brought him to the Beltrami County Jail. 

On June 17^th 2025, Cadwell was arraigned in the 9^th District Court for 2^nd Degree Murder, with bail set in the amount of $1,000,000 with conditions and $2,000,000 without conditions. He is being held in the Beltrami County Jail where he awaits his next court hearing. 

The Beltrami County Sheriff’s Office extends their deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of Mr. Brown during this difficult time.

The Beltrami County Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, Leech lake Tribal Police, Leech Lake Ambulance Service, and the North County First Responders.
