Press Release: Destructive Storm
Press Release: Saturday Evening Storm Update
June 21, 2025
Following destructive severe thunderstorms with possible embedded tornadoes, Beltrami County Board Chair Craig Gaasvig has declared a State of Emergency. This allows for an expedited response by opening additional resources to the efforts to recover from this disaster. The City of Bemidji has also declared a State of Emergency.
As of Saturday evening, several thousand customers remain without power. Due to incredible damage to infrastructure, it may take several days for restoration for all those affected. Crews have called in mutual aid from other companies to assist in recovery efforts.
The Red Cross Emergency Shelter remains open at the Sanford Convention Center at 1111 Events Center Dr NE for those that have been displaced or are in need of services. In addition, there will be an Emergency Food Drop for those impacted by the storm from 10am-12pm, while supplies last, in a similar fashion to Ruby’s Pantry. The items will NOT be the same as what you get from Ruby’s Pantry, and more intended for longer shelf life items.
Emergency Management and the National Weather Service conducted a damage assessment in the Bemidji area. While the damage was catastrophic, no determination on tornadoes has been made at this time and the National Weather Service is reviewing data collected. Regardless of whether this was a tornado, winds over 105mph puts this storm at the equivalent of a strong category 2 hurricane.
Bemidji City Residents can access additional information on debris removal within the city on the Bemidji Fire Department’s Facebook page. The Beltrami County Demolition Landfill has extended their hours to be open on Sunday, June 22 from 9am-3pm and Monday, June 23 8:00am-4:30pm, returning to normal hours on Tuesday.
Please use caution as you clear debris and help your neighbors. Be wary of potential scammers doing nefarious business following a disaster. Review documents before you enter contracts and if you feel rushed, maybe wait and go with a reputable business. Emergency Management mutual aid will be on arriving on Sunday to assist in planning efforts. Stay safe Beltrami County.
“While I am happy no one was hurt, I’m sad our city will never look the same.”
-Christopher Muller
Beltrami County Emergency Management Director
