Marriage

To apply for a marriage license in Beltrami County, both of the applicants must appear in person. A Marriage License Application must be completed with the signature witnessed by a County Registrar. If one of the applicants is unable to appear, the Marriage License Application for One Party Not Appearing must be completed.  A Minnesota resident may apply for a marriage license in any county of the state regardless of residence or where the ceremony will take place. Fees are $115.00, or, with 12 hours of premarital education, the reduced fee is $40.00. A completed and signed Statement of Premarital Education Form must accompany your marriage application for the reduced fee. After the license is issued, it is valid for six months. 

If your marriage license is lost or destroyed, a duplicate marriage license can be issued for a fee of $25.00.

Information necessary when applying for a Marriage License:

  • Legal, full names of both applicants

  • Current addresses

  • Dates of birth (Consent for Minor to Marry)

  • State or foreign country where each person was born

  • Counties where each person lives

  • Social security numbers

  • Information on previous marriages, if any.  Including how marriages terminated, date, city, county, and state of termination

  • Full name the applicants will have after marriage

  • If one or both applicants have a felony conviction on or after August 1, 2000 and wish to change their names, complete the Felony Name Change as part of an Application for a Marriage License Packet.

  • $115.00 without premarital education. Effective July 1, 2010

  • $40.00 with completed and signed Statement of Premarital Education Form (required at the time of marriage application)

  • Full names the applicants will use after marriage

  • Mailing address after marriage (where certificate will be sent)

Marriage certificates are completed by the person performing the marriage ceremony. The signed certificate is forwarded to the County within five days of the ceremony by the person officiating.  One free marriage certificate is mailed to the newly married couple.

For additional copies of certificates the fee is $9.00.  Complete the Request for Marriage Certificate Form and enclose a check or money order made payable to: Beltrami County

When requesting a marriage certificate, include:

  • Full names of the applicants

  • Date of marriage

  • A daytime phone number or email address

  • A check for the marriage certificate(s)

  • Your return address

Attention Genealogists: 

Marriage records are kept on a county level and must be obtained from the county in which the application for license was submitted.  This may not be the county in which the wedding took place.
